The Ancient One once told the Hulk that Strange was meant to be the best of the sorcerers. He is also incredibly intelligent. He has a photographic memory and a genuine thirst for knowledge.

HISTORY:

* When Stephen was a little boy, his older sister Donna died when she drowned playing at a lake with her friends. This was the incident that sparked Stephen's need to become a doctor. He wanted to go to medical school and learn to save lives. Using his photographic memory, he managed to achieve both his PhD and his MD at the same time. He then got a job at New York's Metro-General Hospital as a neurosurgeon and quickly became one of their best and brightest. He developed new methods with his on-again/off-again girlfriend Dr. Christine Palmer. They were revolutionary and he attempted to take full credit for them, which may have lended to that long term off-again.

* Stephen's hands were his entire life. After a severe car accident that nearly killed him, his hands were crushed and almost unusable. It was hard enough to dress himself or shave or write, he certainly couldn't hold them steady to slice open a skull or reattach severed nerves. He spent a small fortune attempting procedure after procedure to regain use of his hands. When a physical therapist told him about a man who had destroyed his spine and still walked again, he had to know more. Stephen located the man and learned he had learned to walk in a place called Kamar-Taj in Nepal. Stephen spent the last bit of his remaining money on a ticket and found his way there.

* Kamar-Taj turned out to be the home of a training center for the mystic arts. In arrogant Stephen tradition, he initially found it all to be pointless fantasy and nearly walked away from it all. Instead, the Ancient One convinced him to stay and he became an incredibly determined and hard-working student. He practiced day and night and read every work he could get his hands on. It had never really occurred to him that entering this could become dangerous until he got wrapped up in an accidental battle defending the New York Sanctum. He tried to walk away then but when threatened again, Stephen couldn't just turn his back on people who needed him. He challenged Dormammu, a being from the Dark Dimension trying to take over the world. By using the Eye of Agamotto, he caught the pair of them in a time loop in another dimension and, despite dying at Dormammu's hands over and over, he continued reliving the same few minutes in order to literally cause the being to rage quit. He made a deal that Dormammu would take his followers and leave Stephen's world for good and Stephen would release him from the time loop.

* After the events with Dormammu, Stephen became the protector of the New York Sanctum, and became a respected Master of the Mystic Arts. He was also entrusted with guarding the Time Stone, the Infinity Stone that was encased inside the Eye of Agomotto. When the Titan Thanos came to Earth in search of all of the remaining Stones, Stephen literally protected it with his life, being kidnapped and tortured by Thanos' henchman Ebony Maw. He was fortunately rescued by Tony Stark and Peter Parker and later joined by a few of the Guardians. While the others worked out a plan, Stephen used the Stone to view all the different futures he could access. It was draining, as he had to actually live them out, and he went through over fourteen million futures. When asked, he revealed that they only won against Thanos in one. So when the time came to confront Thanos, Stephen handed over the Time Stone in order to save Tony Stark's life - something he had earlier sworn he wouldn't do. When Thanos gathered all of the Stones and kept his promise to erase half of the world, Stephen was one of the ones who turned to dust and vanished.

* He would return five years later as the remaining Avengers had gone back in time to retrieve the Stones and create a gauntlet of their own. The Hulk snapped and those who had disappeared returned. Stephen created a portal on Titan for himself and the others who had come back from that fight to return to Earth to the ultimate battle against Thanos. He gathered the other available Masters and they were able to gather and transport a large army to the location of the fighting. In the end, Stephen's 'one' scenario where they won played out, but it meant the loss of Tony Stark, something Stephen feels guilty for as he knew it would happen and wasn't able to stop it.

Stephen Strange has grown from a selfish, arrogant, cocky jerk to a slightly less arrogant, still very confident, and completely selfless man. When pressed, he made the ultimate sacrifice, locking himself away in another dimension and being killed over and over again in order to protect those on Earth. He is still very confident in his abilities, though he is less obvious about it and occasionally slips when he realizes he isn't as perfect as he once thought. His skill with sorcery has actually made him a more compassionate person, despite how quickly he picked it up. Stephen is a very determined and ambitious man who will stop at nothing until he learns what it is he has his sights set on learning. Despite his selfish nature, his intentions have always been good and that's what led him to become a doctor in the first place. The Oath he took as a doctor has also made it difficult for him to fight and kill but he does so in self defense when necessary. Stephen has a good sense of humor, though his jokes tend to learn towards the dry and sarcastic.
